Karl Birkeland - Director of the US Forest Service, National Avalanche Centre
Karl’s work with snow and avalanches as a ski patroller, educator, backcountry forecaster, and researcher spans over 30 years. He founded the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Centre in Bozeman, earned both his MS and PhD degrees focused on snow science, and is currently the Director of the US Forest Service National Avalanche Centre (NAC).
He oversees the nationwide US avalanche centres and works with field practitioners in transferring new and emerging technologies.
Karl is an author and adjunct Professor at Montana State University where he supervises a number of graduate students. He had significant input into the development of the Extended Column Test and the Conceptual Model for Avalanche Forecasting and continues to lead international research and development on understanding avalanche phenomena.
