Updated Avalanche Forecast Elevations for Aoraki and Aspiring

8th November 2024|2 min

During the late spring and early summer each year as the snow line begins to recede, the New Zealand Avalanche Advisory (NZAA) adjusts the avalanche forecast elevation bands for the Aoraki/Mt Cook and Aspiring regions. These seasonal changes are aimed at improving forecast accuracy during the warmer months to help you plan safely for backcountry trips.

It is now time for this change to come into place for 2024. This is essential information for anyone planning trips in the Aoraki/Mt Cook or Aspiring national parks backcountry over summer.

Aoraki/Mt Cook and Aspiring elevation band 800m increases for high alpine, alpine and sub alpine

Why Do These Elevation Bands Need to Change?

Seasonal adjustments to the elevation bands enhance forecast accuracy, better reflecting conditions at higher elevations in the Aoraki/Mt Cook and Aspiring regions. These adjustments allow forecasters to account for the region's high peaks and to better cater to the diverse needs of backcountry users during the late spring and summer periods.

What Does This Mean for You?

Before heading into the backcountry around Aoraki/Mt Cook or Aspiring, check the NZAA for the latest conditions. Make sure you incorporate these refined elevation bands into your trip planning and decision-making.

The avalanche forecasting for Aspiring will continue until the end of December 2024 and the Aoraki/Mt Cook region has year-round forecasting. These elevation bands will return to winter settings around early June 2025, or as conditions require. Stay tuned to NZAA for updates.
